LISTEN TO THE VOICES OF THE YOUTH
- participate in a discussion with young people, researchers and politicians; on youth unemployment and good solutions
As in previous years, the Nordic Centre for Welfare and Social Issues, also this year arranged Nordic Day in connection with European Social Network's, ESN's, annual conference. This year's event took place in Barcelona on Sunday, June 20.
Theme:
This year's theme for Nordic Day 2010 was unemployed youth. The focus was on vulnerable groups, immigrants, school drop-outs and people with disabilities. The choice of theme was based on the fact of youth unemployment being one of Europe's biggest social problems.
Adults often see the challenges of the youth through glasses coloured by experiences from their own youth. But times have changed; good solutions in the past are not necessarily good alternatives today.
During Nordic Day 2010 the youth played the major role. They told about their experiences of marginalization and how it affects their lives.
We presented best practices of intervention aimed at unemployed youth and we invited to an open discussion on how social services should be formed in order to ease the transition from school to labour market.
